Rokoko, the suit that captures human motion

Technological evolution is a frenzy, but when talking specifically about new technologies applied to visual effects, we observe that this field has experienced an even faster transformation, bringing the most extraordinary results. Nowadays, motion capture is a most popular system both in videogame and filmmaking industries to approach reality. This technique records movements performed by humans and animals, and encodes them into a digital model. To accomplish this action, actors wear elasticated suits covered by motion sensors that capture all movements. Actions performed are stored and used as a source to animate digital character in 3D animation.

This technological system is based on photogrammetry and it is mainly used in sci-fi, videogames, and movie industries, but has also reached the fields of sports and medicine.

The latest step accomplished by this technology has the name of Rokoko, the suit that ‘has it all’. A smartSuit created by a Danish startup that captures with hi-fi the body movements, and that has revolutionized the animation industry. With 19 sensors embedded all over its surface, Rokoko allows to record real-time motion even in the outdoors, and be dynamized through a mobile or tablet device. Its endless uses are not limited to animation or film motion capture, but the suit has multiple applications in the field of videogame and virtual reality.

One of its greatest advantages is the cost-cutting that has allowed a greater popularization of this technology for less ambitious productions as well. Besides, the suit allows to film in the actual action setting, unlike regular motion capture techniques, used in specific rooms designed for this use.

Posiblemente este traje no cambie el futuro de Hollywood, pero si ayude a beneficiarse de herramientas como estas a la industria de los videojuegos o la realidad aumentada.

The limits in this field will no longer rely on budgets, but on creativity.
