“The market spins fast and it is a great moment to create in all type of formats”

Blas Egea, with 15 years of professional experience is a creative producer at Balance Productions, the image & film producers at beon. Worldwide. Surrounded by his team members, a “big family” as he call them, dare with projects across the globe.

More than a decade working in the film and TV industries. What exactly attracted to beon. Worldwide?

Yes, 15 to be exact… Well I have undergo through many stages and priorities in my life and now I’m in a moment of expansion and very good creation, for that I had to take a leap and feel supported by a great brand. There comes a time when not only the ideas or the reel are what worth. If you want to grow as an artist, director or whatever you want to call it, it is necessary to pay attention to what the big American agencies defined with “Content is King”, something that is very true, but if there is no engine behind, only ideas remain.

Once Alberto Muñoz calls me and I thought it was a good opportunity and challenge, and that is why I am here. Nowadays there is a lot of competition, but at the same time a lot of demand, both in the advertising market and TV platforms. The market rotates fast and it is a good time to create in all kinds of formats.

Film, TV, music… Does format determine your decision to choose a project over other?

In fact they are very different. I always try to focus on video clips because it is my favorite format. Since my childhood I have watched much more video clips than movies, I use to watch the MTV all the time.
However, after years have passed, I started to watch more cinema, and I even consider TV somehow charming now.

If I look back I see that I have done a lot of television, but as life itself everything revolves around the budget and, nowadays, there is more budget in series and film format. The video clip in Spain is something very secondary, I would say third world. Even so, it allows you to tell a story without third party censorship. The process of the three is very beautiful, you start with an idea and until it materializes many days, months, and even years can pass.

In order to cope with never-ending travels and long shooting hours, the team must be really close. How would you define it?

It is crucial to feel a family. Many working hours, a lot of stress… but the truth is that Balance Productions and I make a great team! Audiovisual productions usually have a lot of things going on in each project, as soon as they are confirmed you have like two 2 days to shoot but, as our producer Laura often says, it seems we like it.

Traveling while working is a coexistence experience. 16 hours shooting average plus breakfast, lunch and dinner… This is what you call a FAMILY, with capital letters. This profession has given me incredible people who luckily are part of my day-to-day.

What project of all executed so far is your top favorite?

Pointing out just one is difficult, but maybe ‘Fixing Fires’, a video clip for Redbull Spain. All my projects are important for me. I showcase frames of all them in my showreel.

There are a lot of projects already executed, such as a video clip for Universal Sweden, a campaign for Ushuaïa Ibiza, a music video for Sony México, Nivea, Police Italia, Tag Heuer, and a long etc. Also, and about to be released, the documentary Monday around electronic music and filmed in different countries with the participation of Laurent Garnier, Ellen Alien, Martin Solveig, etc.

Any new projects you can tell us about?

The documentary about Paco Osuna with testimonies of Richie Hawtin, Seth Troxler, or Dubfire among others. Osuna is the highest expression of his kind in our country and he is among the international top 10 of electronic music artists.
The documentary Coloring the World by Okuda, a global artist that has just launched a campaign for Apple, with 8 sculptures at Seaport, Boston’s most important avenue, he is color ambassador for Adidas… A documentary that will be filmed in three years around the world.

Also, HeadHeackers, a documentary about international hairdressers with lots of patents in the industry that attracts the interest of the CNN and other media, and participate in two film scripts with Xpresion Pixel, currently on its sales process.
